Jack Conroy is a young gold prospector who during the gold rush crossed Alaska with his companions Alex and Skunker to look for a mine left to him by his father. In a remote forest, the three men and their sled dogs are attacked by a pack of wolves: during the night a female half-wolf, half-dog lures the dogs away from the camp to be eaten by the pack. Skunker attempts to defend the dogs, shooting at the pack and wounding the female, but is killed by the other wolves. The following morning, Jack and Alex continue their voyage, while the female wolf drags herself to her den, where she dies. Her cub wanders out in search of food and lands in a trap; an Indian called Grey Beaver finds him, names him White Fang, and trains him as a sled dog. Some time later Jack arrives in Grey Beaver’s village and befriends White Fang, now an adult, who saves him from a bear attack. The young man begins to restore his father’s hut and mine, while Grey Beaver meets a man, Beauty Smith, in the city, who through deception has White Fang brought to him for use in dog-fighting tournaments. Smith gets rich with his bets, taking advantage of White Fang who wins all of his fights until he is defeated in a final battle. Passing through where the fight is taking place, Jack interrupts the combat and saves the wolf. When his work in Alaska in finished, Jack must decide whether to return to civilization, abandoning the wolf to its destiny, or take it with him, far from his world.
