As long as the village exists, so will its traditions; when it ceases to exist, they will become a mere display of themselves. This is the reflection drawn from the three rites narrated in this documentary. We are in Friuli Venezia Giulia, between the Natisone, Valcellina, and Carnia valleys. The film recounts the preparation and unfolding of rituals that are diverse yet similar in their collective meaning. In Rodda, the Pust carnival passes through the villages like a noisy and irreverent rite of passage, where masks enact the conflict between order and chaos. In Erto, Good Friday becomes a choral representation of the Passion of Christ, a journey that transforms the town into a sacred theater. In Cercivento, the night of the Cidulis lights up the sky with flaming wooden wheels launched like shooting stars, in a ritual that blends memory and belonging. The gestures and voices of those who preserve these rites to resist depopulation and oblivion. Men and women, including young people, who uphold the power of rituals as a collective language – not out of nostalgia, but as a living practice and a daily choice.
