For ten years, Norwegian photographer Asgeir Helgestad followed the life of a polar bear named Forst in Svalbard: the place on earth where temperatures are rising fastest, causing the progressive disappearance of ice and leaving behind a vast expanse of mud. In ten years, Forst gave birth to eight cubs. Both of the first cubs, Snow and Ice, were killed for coming too close to humans in search of food, or perhaps because humans, with their homes, snowmobiles, helicopters, and even video cameras, got too close to their living environment. With profound empathy and exquisite imagery, the protagonist and director also becomes a narrator, and in recounting Forst's story, he opens a window of reflection on the impact of the human species on the lives of animal species. The superb images of Svalbard provide a counterpoint to the bears' dramatic struggle for survival and the “right” of humans to shoot and kill them.
