Ghadamali’s voice narrates the story. He and his elderly wife live in a modest house in a mountain village in Iran. Of their children, only one son is unmarried and continues to live with them. The young man is helpful: he works in the stable, assists his mother with meals, and thoughtfully repairs the television antenna, yet he too longs to move to the city. When he eventually leaves, the two elderly parents are left alone in sorrow. His mother falls ill and is reunited with her children in the hospital. Her illness brings loneliness to Ghadamali’s life, along with the hope that their son might return home. In recounting the enduring dilemma of whether to leave or stay in the mountains, the director, through Ghadamali’s words, paints a portrait of rural Iran in which “the government wants everyone to become consumers and ensures that young people go to the city while the elderly are left alone in the village.” He reveals dynamics similar to those found in many other mountainous regions, in a film about hardship, loneliness, indifference, and the possibility of a renewed spring of life.
