Near a well in the arid sands of the Batha region of Chad, Youssif recounts how once upon a time there were villages and livestock. Now it's desert, and few people and animals remain. The nomads converge on this well, one of the last sources of water for their livestock, decimated by the drought that, along with the presence of shepherds, has also wiped out the huts, built of earth and straw, that once dotted the horizon. Thus, those least responsible for the climate crisis seem to be paying the heaviest price. By expertly focusing on close-ups and featuring the protagonist's engaging narrative, the film forcefully brings home the problem of water scarcity and prompts us to reflect on the consequences of our lifestyle thousands of miles away, in a land parched in part by our greed and avarice.
