A Cambodian screenwriter and director, he was born in Phnom Penh in 1964. After fleeing his country, he settled in France where he studied at the French National Film School. In 2000, he won the Cinéma du Réel Award. With S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine (2003), he received awards at the Chicago International Film Festival and the European Film Awards. The Missing Picture (2013) won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for the 2014 Oscars. The documentary Irradiated (2020) won the Jury Prize at the Berlin Film Festival.
