In the mountains of Cambodia, the last members of the Indigenous Bunong community struggle to withstand the forces of modernity and globalization, which are severing their ties to ancestral traditions, a self-sufficient way of life in harmony with the land, and the worship of ancestors and spirits. Above all, they are losing the forest that has sustained them for generations. Burdened by debt, they are forced to fell and burn ancient trees, while increasingly erratic, unseasonal rains threaten their rice harvests. Through the voice of Pa Kreb, one of the community's elders, the film speaks of a world consumed by a so-called civilization whose exploitative systems ensnare those who come into contact with it. As the ancient rice-grain ritual—the spiritual heart of Bunong culture—disappears, so too does the community's future. Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh, who fled his homeland for Europe, bears witness to this vanishing world from afar, interweaving contemporary footage with archival images in split screen, underscoring the widening gulf between past and present.
