Giancarlo Murranca is a percussionist and instrument maker. He invites the director to his “refuge” in the Sardinian mountains, where he intends to build a m'bira that may be his last. Suffering from spina bifida since birth, which causes him excruciating pain, he uses marijuana rather than morphine, fighting for its therapeutic use. “If I play, I'm in heaven; if I stop, I'm in hell,” he confesses. The work of building the instrument is accompanied by his stories: “The sound must be like that of water,” he says. And when we see him playing in the woods, we discover the profound meaning of his philosophy: “Music is imitation, and man, since the beginning, has sought to imitate what he hears in nature.” The film alternates documentary investigation with animation, in an intimate dialogue that reaches the sensitive core of Giancarlo's life and of human existence: “Amplify beauty and you walk away free: that's called death.”
