The Jerada coal mine, in the northeastern Moroccan desert, was officially closed in 2001, yet miners continue to work there, clandestinely, out of necessity. Bringing together the local elderly miners for a “group portrait,” using 3D images and original computer graphics, the director illustrates the mine's structure and the dangerous work underground, with long takes alternating with tableaux vivants, bridging fiction and reality.
Randa Maroufi
A Moroccan visual artist and filmmaker, she was born in Casablanca in 1987. She studied at the Institut National des Beaux-Arts in Tétouan, the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts d’Angers, and Le Fresnoy. Through her work, she questions the role of images and the limits of representation. She has participated in the Lyon Biennale and exhibited at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and the New Museum in New York. She lives in Paris.
