Qihuo lives alone in a dilapidated hut. Her parents, forced to migrate for work, live in the city, while her grandfather, who had been her only caregiver, has recently died. When she gets her first period, she and her two best friends set out on a journey into the mountains to buy a skirt for the traditional rite of passage known as “changing the skirt.” Blending documentary and fiction, the film follows the three girls as they travel through the rugged mountain landscape, gradually revealing their intimate lives and the questions that shape their futures. As they reflect on the paths that lie ahead, they confront a destiny seemingly prescribed by tradition—becoming wives and mothers—or the possibility of continuing their education and forging a different life.Interwoven with animated sequences that elevate their journey into the realm of legend, the film captures the girls clinging to the final moments of childhood before adulthood, with all its expectations and irreversible choices, takes hold.
