An asbestos factory along the Soka River in Slovenia has brought work, homes and hope to the inhabitants of the village of Anhovo for over a century, and has also been the cause of illness, suffering and death. For a century, toxic substances and miasmas have been released into the river and the air from its factories. The voices sadly tell the story of this factory, which survived wars and regime changes. They seem like voices coming from afar, as if wanting to distance themselves from those events, while the use of upside-down shots seems to want to reverse the point of view. Today smoke still rises from the factory chimneys, as if time had stopped under that “white veil” (bela koprena). The film gives voice back to all those who have been silenced in the name of progress and the economy and questions us about what remains when the sky clears of the smoke that has prevented us from seeing the harmful consequences of our actions on the environment.
