At the Tibhirine monastery, in the mountains of Algeria, a community of Trappist monks lives in harmony with the Muslim villagers, to whom they provide medical and pharmaceutical assistance. When, following a terrorist attack, the abbot of the community refuses to allow the army to defend the monastery, tensions rise. Despite being urged to leave, the monks decide to stay in order to continue helping the local population, ultimately meeting a tragic end.
