REJEITO

Pedro de Filippis / Brazil, United States / 2023 / 75 min / Colour

The inhabitants of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais challenge the political indifference of the multinational mining company Vale, in an unequal battle. The extraction of iron oxides produces waste that ends up in river basins and which, retained by gigantic and poorly constructed dams, endangers the lives of residents. The latest tragedy occurred in 2019, when an avalanche of red mud swept away entire villages, killing 270 people and causing an environmental disaster of epic proportions. Despite this, politics has not managed to stop the advance of the multinational, which plans a new mine. Maria Teresa Corujo, activist and parliamentarian, fights incessantly against indifference, while the displaced people return to protest. Images of mining operations and river flows alternate with scenes of emotional encounters and evictions, offering a glimpse into the battle for environmental justice.
