From the waters of a clear mountain river emerges the exhausted body of a wild salmon, embodied by a woman. Her eggs hatch underwater and the young salmon try to escape predators and pollution by swimming for miles and miles, in a race for survival to reach the sea: an epic migration that includes a smoltification phase in which the young salmon undergo crucial physiological changes to adapt to salt water. Only those who survive, once grown, guided by their sense of smell, can return to their home river to reproduce, overcoming obstacles again and becoming an essential part of the ecosystem. Wild Summon is a fascinating natural history fantasy short film that follows the dramatic life cycle of wild salmon, narrated by the deep voice of Marianne Faithfull and made with hybrid techniques, which offer a unique visual and emotional experience.
Karni Arieli
They are an Israeli-British couple living in Bristol. They founded the independent film and animation studio Sulkybunny, where they make music videos and commercials. Their short film Turning (2010) was nominated for a BAFTA in 2011. They directed Flytopia (2012) and participated in the Berlinale Talent Campus in 2013. Their latest film Wild Summon (2023) was selected for Cannes and nominated for a BAFTA in 2024 for Best Short Film.
