ATIRKÜL IN THE LAND OF REAL MEN

Janyl Jusupjan / Czech Republic, France, Kyrgyzstan / 2023 / 65 min / Colour

In Kyrgyzstan, Buzkashi is an ancient and popular sport practiced only by men, who compete on horseback to grab a goat carcass and carry it over the goal line. Atirkül is an enterprising woman with a strong sense of humor who inserts herself into this completely male world. Tired of her husband's absence, she starts her own horse trading business. At the same time, she becomes the key figure in training and assisting Buzkashi players, with the aim of upholding and passing on the cultural heritage of her home country. Her determination offers a new perspective on the possibility of overcoming gender roles.
