SOUND OF THE SPIRITS

Lin Hnin Aye / Germany, Myanmar / 2023 / 63 min / Colour

Italian premiere

In the heart of Shan State, Myanmar, in the village of Chaung Gyi, the Lisu people live in deep connection with nature, passing on ancient traditions. Lisu animism envelops the forests and silent highland fields where farmers mow their grain, ever alert to the spirits that lurk there, ready to cause all manner of mischief. The mellifluous voice of the shaman Byar Wu echoes through the mountains, summoning the lost souls of his community to be protected from misfortune and disease, revealing an intangible world of souls that continue to persist. Among the people going about their daily activities, the shaman prepares rituals, with chickens, woven plants, incense and broken eggs to drive negative energies away from the dwellings.
