AMBIN - THE ROCK AND THE FEATHER

The Ambin Massif is an acrochore, a high-altitude desert between Italy and France. The camera explores fifteen peaks over three thousand metres and the little ice that has resisted global warming. This is a  vast mountain with a panorama of seasons and geological eras, a living memory of conflicts, explorations and linguistic diversity. It is a changing place with a thousand-year history and a symbol of human and environmental challenges.

Fabio and Alice are two young shepherds from the Veneto who, with their child, live in a caravan for most of the year, following their thousand sheep in transhumance between the Po Valley and the Belluno Dolomites. In addition to taking care of the shearing, feeding and vaccination of the sheep, they narrate transhumance with passion, making their profession a lifestyle.

From the waters of a mountain river emerges the exhausted body of a wild salmon, embodied by a woman. Its young try to escape predators and pollution, swimming for kilometres and kilometres, in a race for survival aimed at reaching the sea. Only those who are saved, once grown, will be able to return to the river to reproduce, becoming an essential part of the ecosystem.

Immediately after Bangladesh, Denmark is the second most cultivated country in the world, but in the last 20 years 80% of its species have become extinct, hence the need for something to help get biodiversity back on track. Amid controversies and questions, the documentary follows the largest Danish rewilding project in Hammer Bakker, Northern Jutland.

But the balance of nature is precarious if you interfere, and if black arrives it overwhelms the colours. It took seven days to make everything perfect but only one, the eighth day, is needed to mark the end of life on the Planet.

The tragedy that occurred on the Marmolada on 3 July 2022 is seen and told through the eyes and voices of the rescuers and those who sprung into action, even at the risk of their own lives, to try to save as many lives as possible. Interviews and unpublished audiovisual material show the impotence of man in the face of the strength of the mountains and the generosity and professionalism of those who do their utmost every day to help those up there who are in difficulty.
