Attilio Benetti
“Fossils are like characters in fables. If you don’t know them and don’t know how to place them in context, they are hard to understand”.
Fables and fossils were the passions of Attilio Benetti: two interests that, only in appearance, are distant. Both, in fact, testify to his great love for the Lessinia, his native land. He knew all of the hiding places of the fade and ogres who populate the fables of the Lessinia. He discovered them when he was a child, listening to the stories of the filo, and he loved telling them to children, because he knew how important it was to keep those stories alive. Both paleontologist and speleologist, Benetti founded the geo-paleontological museum at Camposilvano and collected the fossils it houses. He discovered a special kind of fossil that bears his name. This morning, at 11 am, a ceremony was held to name this museum for Attilio Benetti, who was the memory and conscience of the Lessinia.
