Treasure of the Lisu
USA / 2010 / 30 min / Colour
The Lisu are natives of eastern Tibet who live in the mountains surrounding the bed of the Nu River, in southwestern China, an area squeezed between the ancient and modern worlds. Ah- Cheng, a musician and lute maker, even if illiterate, has very clear ideas about what is essential to the Lisu’s cultural identity. He carries on their most important traditions, above all the construction of six-stringed lutes. With this work, he attempts to save the region’s musical tradition and defend it against impoverishment by the music brought up there by Western missionaries.
