Stefano Tagliaferri / Italy / 2012 / 45 min / Colour
Freely based on a popular tale, this film is set in Pagnona, in Alta Valsassina, in the early 1920s, and interpreted by the townspeople. On November 2, All Souls Day, Anna, a mother and war widow who looks after her ailing child, realizes that she has run out of candles. She leaves her house in search of more, as she needs their light to assist her son during the night. But her neighbours, relatives, and compatriots find excuses for not helping her and show indifference in the face of her desperate search for help. That is until, out of the darkness, a man gives her a lighted candle. The following morning, the woman discovers with dismay the true nature of his help and attempts to resolve the distressing mystery.
