The coexistence between Man and the arid karstic lands is not always easy. Climbing the rocky mountains is tiring, but essential to gleaning what little they have to offer. Up there, every gift of Nature is precious. A small cultivated patch yields nutritious potatoes. The graft on a wild tree is the promise of one day eating pears. A beehive inside a trunk, with its colony of the insects and their honey, will be brought home. Rare species of grass serve to feed the livestock. The water, which miraculously gurgles up between the stones, will quench the thirst of both men and animals. But Man also climbs mountains to satisfy another need, to communicate.
