Imre and Pirosca, husband and wife, spend the summer next to their charcoal kiln in Viscri, a small village in Transylvania. For some time, this region has become an important tourist destination and so the daily tasks of the two coal-workers have been transformed into an attraction for visitors. The construction of the timber pile, the slow burning of logs and, finally, the uncovering of the charcoal to extract the coal have become a kind of living museum exhibition. Tourists scramble to take pictures, make videos and ask questions. And so, the noisy chatter of visitors in search of “typical” people to photograph now invades a life that was once calm and isolated.
