Out of thin air

This time the spectacular landscape of Ladakh is not the backdrop of an Alpine feat, a geographical or anthropological exploration, or one of the many portraits of monks or Buddhists or nomadic populations. The Ladakh of Out of Thin Air is the land of one of the most dynamic and extravagant film industries in India. Surrounded by the Karakorum and Himalayan mountain ranges, this region, swept by icy winds, dotted by Buddhist monasteries, and divided by glacial valleys, experiences a lifestyle far different than that of the high plains. Often it is the shepherds who, having abandoned their ancient occupation, descend to the capital Leh, to begin a new life as workers, artisans or entrepreneurs. In this context was born a film scene second only to Bollywood, but far more particular. The protagonists are drivers, waiters, policemen and monks. To look behind the scenes of this movement is to discover an amusing narration of the Indian mountains that is far from that of tourist postcards and very significant for understanding the changing lifestyles in that area.
