Prezzemolo, without batteries without electricity
Marzia Pellegrino, Sandro Gastinelli / Italy / 2008 / 40 min / Colour
It is not unusual to meet Mario Collino, whose stage name is Prezzemolo, in the piazzas of the Piedmont region, busy with his dumùre et na vira, the games of years gone by. Prezzemolo succeeds in bringing to life the popular knowledge of earlier times, consisting of sayings, rhymes, songs, and stories. His tales spring from the spontaneous use of an infinite series of found objects and materials. In the hands of Mario Collini, every object becomes a toy, a meditation, an example and entertainment. This documentary is not simply a presentation of Prezzemolo’s demonstrations in the piazzas and schools all over Italy, but rather it is a true voyage inside his singular personality. We discover and get to know Prezzemolo as he walks along the Cunese plain, during the night of the Valle Stura, on the switchbacks that rise 2000 meters to the sanctuary of Sant’Anna di Vinadio, along the route of one of his favorite and most often-repeated pilgrimages.
