In a short span of time, Fern finds herself living a nightmare: she loses her husband and the company where she works, in Nevada, is forced to close. It’s too much for her. She sells most of her belongings, loads the remainder into a van, and leaves for the American West. Thus begins a nomadic life, where seasonal jobs combine with new encounters and new horizons, and where moments of community with other wanderers give way to the solitude of uncontaminated nature. Thus traveling, in its purest form, transforms Fern not into a homeless but rather a houseless person, allowing her to give life to a new process of perceiving the world.

Chloé Zhao
Born in Beijing, she is a Chinese writer, director and producer. Her debut film was Songs My Brothers Taught Me (2015), presented at the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes Film Festival. She then directed The Rider (2017). With Nomadland (2020) she won the Golden Lion at the 2020 Venice Film Festival and the Golden Globes for best dramatic film and best director. The work also won the 2021 Oscar for best film and best director.
