INDUSTRIE DES MARBRES À CARRARE
France / 1914 / 6 min / Colour
Production Gaumont. Restored by EYE Film Institute Netherlands at Haghefilm laboratori from a tinted and pochoir positive print
For thousands of years in the area surrounding Carrara, in the Apuan Alps, the eponymous precious white marble has been extracted, universally loved by ancient and contemporary sculptors and architects for its fine grain and opalescent appearance. The workers are engaged in splitting the stones, using winches, and sliding the marble blocks downstream, while the first explosives and machinery are being used.
