The nineteenth-century intellectuals and aristocrats who traveled through Italy were enchanted both by the charm of the impressive archaeological remains and by the romantic and primitive aura of the surrounding rural areas. Thus, after having explored Rome, the Grand Tour could continue through the small villages of the Lazio and Abruzzo hinterland. Views of natural landscapes and village life are today a precious remembrance that immortalizes the faces, places, and customs of the Abruzzo of that time.
