RUDÉ BOTY

RED SHOES

Anna Podskalská / Czech Republic / 2021 / 14 min / Colour

Róza is a peasant girl. Hers is a life of toil. She is consoled by the desire to dance at the village festival. But when the traditional dance begins, no one asks Róza to dance, until a stranger enters the hall and invites her, offering her a pair of red shoes. With those shoes, Róza dances like no other and until she is exhausted. But that dance soon turns into a desire and she, in the end, a condemnation, when the young woman cannot take off those demon-possessed shoes. Only the inevitable, crude intervention of her mother will free her from this curse. Inspired by the ancient European fairy tale, made famous by Hans Christian Andersen, the animation is accompanied by an overwhelming soundtrack that captures the frenzy of the dance and the curse of the girl, overwhelmed by her own desire.
