ABANDONED VILLAGE

Mariam Kapanadze / Georgia / 2020 / 14 min / Colour

In the image of a moor one can make out meadows, shrubs, a few trees, and a single house. Sound is a protagonist as much as the only animated image of the alternation of day and night, of the passing of the seasons, with the sun peeking out of the fog, the storm shaking the trees, and the house where the lights come on and finally smoke rises from the chimney. The fixity of the image becomes a suggestive and evocative journey where flowing time gives movement to what would seem stationary, gives life to what would seem dead. An archetypal portrait of every place that has been abandoned, where the village becomes a living being, first left alone by men and then illuminated by the light of a fire that evokes a possible return, in the eternal repetition of the before and after of life and death.
