LOOKING FOR HORSES

Stefan Pavlović / Bosnia and Herzegovina, France, Netherlands / 2021 / 88 min / Colour

Zdravko, an old fisherman deaf from the wounds sustained in the war in the former Yugoslavia, lives alone, incapable of socialising, on a small island in a lake in the Bosnian mountains. Stefan, a young director, has returned to his native land; he speaks with difficulty due to stuttering and barely remembers his native language. The two stay together for days on the shores of the lake or sailing on a small boat in search of an elusive herd of wild horses that, according to Zdravkro, would appear from time to time on the shores of the lake. Zdravko gradually opens up his world of memories and life choices while, behind the camera, Stefan's few and uncertain words are heard. When the fisherman invites the director to steer the boat, their roles are reversed, or merged, and it turns out that the subject of the film is the intimacy that grows between the two, the fraternal friendship that results in Stefan's tears as he rests on the shoulder of Zdravkro. The two await, and the spectators with them, those wonderful horses that sometimes appear suddenly. And this is their secret.
