Entre Fuego y Agua
Between Fire and Water
Viviana Gómez Echeverry / Colombia / 2020 / 92 min / Colour
Camilo is the adopted son of an indigenous couple of the Quillasinga tribe, from the Laguna de la Cocha in the mountainous southwest of Colombia. The only black man in his community, he has always felt different. Camilo loves his family, but the bullying he has endured and the frustration of being denied the right to know his true origins have made him hostile, addicted to alcohol, and sometimes violent. After yet another manifestation of irritability, the boy is confined and assigned to community work. Norberto, the adoptive father, consults with the indigenous chief of the tribe and in a night ceremony Camilo is given the sacred medicine Ayahuasca, the spiritual path of the Quillasinga people. The boy has a vision of his biological mother and after this experience is ready to embark on a journey to accept his identity as a child of two cultures.
