Winter in the Rainforest
Anu-Laura Tuttelberg / Estonia, Lithuania, Mexico / 2019 / 9 min / Colour
Italian premiere
Pure white porcelain figures come to life in the heart of a mysterious rainforest. A ballerina, born from a flower, dances on the branches of a tree and strange insects of the most bizarre shapes come to life as a spider weaves its trap. They are fragile forms, part of a time that flows far away, hidden from our world. Anu-Laura Tuttelberg, an Estonian director specialising in puppet animation, shot Winter In The Rainforest during two months of work in a forest in Chiapas, Mexico, the site of the encounter between stop-motion animation technique and the scenery of a stream that flows between the branches. The idea of blending a laborious and complex technique such as stop-motion animation - which requires absolute control of the staging - into a wild and unpredictable natural environment, was developed during an artistic residency in the village of San Roque de Cumbaza, nestled in the forests of the Peruvian Amazon.
