Asho

Jafar Najafi / Iran (Islamic Republic of) / 2019 / 30 min / Colour

Italian premiere

Asho is a very young Iranian shepherd, energetic and restless like the eagle, whose name he bears. His days are spent caring for the family's goat flock, with whom he shares a close and joyful relationship, that is attentive, playful and surprising intimate. However, the boy is also a passionate cinephile, which pushes him to see film after film on his battered tablet and to talk about cinema with anyone who will listen. As enthusiastic about Kiarostami as Tim Burton, Asho has very clear ideas: he has talent to burn and his future is in front of the camera, as an actor. The only obstacle to his dream is the arranged wedding to his cousin. The director follows the two children's skirmishes with participatory tenderness, photographed in a landscape of luminous beauty: a portrait of a rural Iran, still tied to the traditions imposed by religion, but in which the dream of a new lifestyle is also insinuating itself from the cracked screen of a smartphone.
