DIE HERBERGE
THE HOSTEL
Ulu Braun / Germany / 2017 / 15 min / Colour
Past and future, traces of the old and signs of the new, the most diverse and unusual characters populate a land that alternates between rough and inhospitable, idyllic, and surreal, where a biblical landscape blends with the unequivocal signs of Western civilisation. Here stands a crumbling and gloomy "Hostel", which turns out to be part pub for motorcyclists and rockers and part shelter for hikers. In its rooms, different worlds, epochs and faces meet, without meeting each other. With a single long take, the animation of Ulu Braun brings together the most diverse elements in an apparent "non-sense", painting a mountain that oscillates between realism and symbolism, leaving open any possible interpretation, without pretending to reveal any.
