SULEIMAN MOUNTAIN
Elizaveta Stishova / Kyrgyzstan, Russian Federation / 2017 / 102 min / Colour
Takht-i-Suleiman is not only a mountain in the province of Oš, in Kyrgyzstan. It is a sacred place, where the remains of an ancient king rest. It is the throne of Solomon, the pillar of a great sanctuary. From the slopes to the summit, thousands of faithful approach its stones, with laments, supplications and songs. Its grandeur is the point of origin and arrival of the journey of Karabas, a petty swindler who crosses the country in his truck, moving along the valleys and plateaus that dominate the landscape. Uluk, his lost son, was found by his first wife, Zhipara, who accompanies the man in his wanderings along with his second companion, Turganbyubyu. At the center of the ancient Silk Road, Karabas will seek a balance in this journey, divided between freedom without a destination and the horizon of fatherhood, in a story that weaves evocations from the Epic of Manas, the monumental epic poem of the Kyrgyz people, with the intimate and bitter features of a painful family catharsis.
