RETABLO
Alvaro Delgado Aparicio L. / Denmark, Norway, Peru / 2018 / 101 min / Colour
Growing up in a small town in the Peruvian Andes is not easy, especially if you are 14, have no friends, and rather than play football prefer to help your father in his shop. Segundo experiments a special and solitary happiness, in his world circumscribed by the house and the studio in which he follows the work of his beloved father Noé, a renowned artist of retablos, lively altars dedicated to popular devotion, in which a colourful cast of characters reproduces, in scale, the South American universe. Knowledge of the world, for Segundo, passes through the gaze of Noé and his ability to reduce the complexity of human relationships to the scale of a diorama. But an unexpected revelation will shatter this fragile relationship, pushing the man to a tragic gesture and the boy to respond with stubborn silence to the violence of men. The only salvation can come from the artistic gesture, which will concretise the most moving and impossible of reconciliations.
