8TH CONTINENT
Yorgos Zois / Greece / 2017 / 11 min / Colour
An orange dot floats on the blue Greek sea. A small boat approaches and pulls it on board. At the center of a nearby island, in an open dump, a mountain of life-jackets, thermal blankets and lost toys is accumulating. Only the wind moves these relics, who seem to agitate and whisper under its indifferent breath. Night falls and an ironic scarecrow made from a life-jacket stands erect against the sea, mocking the faraway lighthouse that signals the route to the sailors. With the last fading light, the reflecting strips of the jackets light up like frightful wisps. This mesmerizing vision, without a single word, echoes the tragedy of thousands of refugees forced to face the sea in search of a better fate.
