CUANDO EL TORO LLORÓ
WHEN THE BULL CRIED
Karen Vázquez Guadarrama, Bart Goossens / Belgium, Bolivia / 2017 / 64 min / Colour
In the mountains of Bolivia, an impervious mine has attracted a diverse population of men and women in search of fortune. The work in the belly of the earth, pierced by dynamite, is hard and dangerous, and so the miners invoke El Tío, the fierce god of the mountain, to protect them. They battle their fear with alcohol and coca, superstition is rampant along with violence, and the days go by in the hope of a rich find that can turn fate. Sacrifices and archaic rituals are enacted to propitiate the spirits and please Mother Earth, but the exhausted faces of the people betray the fact that their faith is severely shaken with each new death. When the mountain suddenly ceases to return the precious metal, life becomes even harder and they prepare for a grandiose sacrifice to win back the favour of the angry god. If the bull cries, however, it will be a sign of imminent misfortune.
