DIE EINSIEDLER
THE EREMITES
Ronny Trocker / Austria, Germany / 2016 / 110 min / Colour
After a tragic accident in the mountains, Albert is the only remaining child of Rudl and Marianne, an elderly couple who live on a farm in the South Tyrol Alps. Marianne, well aware that the farm has no future, pushes Albert to work in the valley, in a marble quarry. Her determination to distance her son from the mountains leads her to hide from him the sudden death of his father, who she secretly buries near the farm. The strong ties to his childhood and a sense of responsibility toward his elderly mother initially lead Albert to return to the farm, but events open his eyes, and push him to turn the page. A cold, melancholic anthem that looks with bitterness at the end of a humble, silent world, whose last traces disappear from view under a heavy snowfall.
