TIGMI N IGREN
HOUSE IN THE FIELDS
Tala Hadid / Morocco, Qatar / 2017 / 86 min / Colour
Life in a Berber community in the southwestern region of the Moroccan Atlas Mountains has for centuries been the same. The rigid winter gives way to a mild spring and then summer, with fields full of flowers and trees offering delicious fruits. In the evening, before falling asleep, the sisters Khadija and Fatima lie down in bed and talk about their future. Fatima will marry at the end of summer, and with a shade of melancholy reveals that she will have to move to the capital after the wedding and give up her studies. Khadija instead dreams of becoming a lawyer; she loves to study and debate. At the end of the documentary, the stiff wedding ceremony, full of rituals and symbolism, underlines how the girls' dreams will soon clash with the system of rules and traditions that still dictate the laws of the village.
