THE HATEFUL EIGHT
Quentin Tarantino / United States / 2015 / 167 min / Colour
Quentin Tarantino's eighth film is the quintessence of the cartoonish and "pulp" excess that distinguishes him. The director's second film of a possible Western trilogy, and an homage to Sergio Leone, whom he admires, it is masterfully set to music by Ennio Morricone, who for this original score won an Oscar, the BAFTA and the Golden Globe. Set in snowy Wyoming, just after the Civil War, the story narrates the events of eight people of dubious reputation who meet by chance in a remote tavern on a winter's night. Through them, the director explores almost obsessively the concepts of identity and wickedness, true or presumed, in their various facets, in a setting that contrasts the white of the snow with the black of the figures and the copious burst of the bloody red. The movie was made entirely with sumptuous 70 mm Panavision film.
